For the past 5 years, MOMS Club of Schertz, TX has partnered with 1HOPE for Kids to help bring Christmas cheer to foster kids in our area. 1HOPE for Kids is a foster care and adoption agency providing the counties in and around San Antonio with training, licensing, and support. This “Christmas Bears” Toy Drive gets its name from the cute bear-shaped wishlists foster parents help their kids fill out. Each bear asking for up to three toys, needs, or other wants–totaling about $50 per bear.
This year, our chapter sponsored 12 kids from 3 families. We collected 27 different gifts and $150 in gift cards for boys and girls ranging in age from 1 to 15 years old. Our members lovingly signed up to purchase specific gifts or donate towards the gift cards. Then our AVP, Niki Brandon, wrapped each present and together with our president, Stephanie Adams, drove the packages to the 1HOPE for Kids collection spot.
It is a rewarding toy drive that we are all excited to participate in each year. While aspects of this drive looked different this year–such as the lack of a toy wrapping party–we are still grateful to have the opportunity to bring a bit of Christmas magic to kids in foster care.
