START PREPARING EARLY FOR A SMOOTH ELECTION PROCESS

There are several things you can do now to prepare your chapter for the elections, and to ensure a full slate of officers.

  • Remind your chapter of the upcoming elections. Let them know what the various positions are, and what they entail in terms of time, responsibilities, etc.
  • Search out qualified prospective candidates. DO NOT WAIT FOR PEOPLE TO COME TO YOU — GO TO THEM! Too often, outgoing Presidents and their Boards wait for people to approach them, and it never happens! There are a lot of terrific potential officers out there who, due to shyness, modesty, lack of confidence, whatever, will not come forward, but would be thrilled to be asked to serve.
  • Update officer job descriptions. Use the Chapter Manual as a guide, and highlight the duties and expectations of each position. Having a clear outline of what’s expected from each office, and approximate time commitments, if available, helps future officers make an informed decision when accepting a nomination. Remember that each office holder may customize the position to her strengths and interests, so focus on the duties, rather than the specific things an individual may choose to add. This exercise may encourage the board to simplify and delegate, which are important to leadership success.
